Dhulikhel

Dhulikhel, at 1550m, is a popular, interesting small town to view the Himalayan. There are some beautiful old buildings in this town. The main place to view the mountains is the parade ground on the ridge a little east of the center of town.
There are some good day walks in the area. Many people come here to get warmed up before doing a longer trek. The people in the village are Newars.

In the main square there is the Harisiddhi Temple and Narayan Temple, both Vishnu temples.

The most popular place to watch the sunrise over the mountains is at the Kali Temple on top of the hill in the southeast. You walk to the Panorama View Lodge and keep walking another half-hour. Ridi Bazaar.

Bhagwati Mandir, in the northwest part of town, is a high point in the city and from where there are good views of the mountains.

There is no place to change money in Dhulikhel.

Where to Stay – Lower
During the high season places should be booked in advance.
Nawaranga Guest House (61226), half a km from the main square towards the post office, is a friend place that has basic room with common bath for Rs 200/250 and dorm beds for Rs 60. It has a good restaurant. It is a popular place.
Panorama View Lodge (62085), about 15 minutes up the southeast hill, has rooms with bath and hot water downstairs for Rs 400/600 and Rs 700 upstairs. There are some basic rooms for Rs 100/150. It has great views. It is in a secluded location but is can be difficult to get to without your own transportation.
Silk Road Lodge (61269), on the main road, has rooms with common bath for Rs 175.
Mountain (could be Mount View) View Guest House (64039), next door, has basic rooms for Rs 250. It has some good views.
Snow View Lodge (61229), 1km from the main square in a quiet location, has rooms with hot water. It has a pleasant garden. It has a good restaurant.
Royal East Inn, next to the bus stand, rooms with common bath for Rs 250/350 and with bath for Rs 450/500. It has a good garden and there are good views from the roof. It has a restaurant with Indian, Italian and Mexican.
Hotel Gauri Shankar Mountain View (62079) has nice gardens. It has great views from the upstairs dining room.

Where to Stay – Middle and High
Himalayan Horizon Hotel Sun-N-Snow (Kathmandu office: 225-092; email: bagmati@dmn.wlink.com.np) is a nice Newari-style building. It has an excellent back terrace.
Dhulikhel Lodge Resort (61114; fax 64001; Kathmandu office: 212-988), near the bus stop just off the main road, is a well-managed place with nice architecture and gardens. It has modern rooms with great views for $55/65. Discounts up to 35%. It has a popular restaurant.
Mirabel Resort (61972; fax 63225; email: sre@vishnu.ccsl.com.np), 250m down the road to Banepa, is a well-designed villa style place that has rooms with a balcony, TV, fridge and phone for $100/110. It has two restaurant, pleasant grounds, and great views from the terrace. It is one of the best places in town.
Himalayan Horizon Hotel (61296; fax 61476), on the road to Banepa, has traditional woodcarving and has a pleasant garden. All the comfortable rooms have great view of the mountains and are $56/60 and deluxe rooms for $ 60/70. During the low season there is a 25% discount. There is a very good restaurant in front of the hotel with excellent mountain views. It has some Nepali dishes and is not cheap.
Woodlands Mountain Tower Resort (Kathmandu office: 220-123) has a revolving restaurant.
High View Resort (61966; fax 250-364), half a km from the highway in a quiet location, it has good views.
Himalayan Shangri-La Resort (Kathmandu: 427-837; email: himalayan@hsr.wlink.com.np), 1½ km east of Mahendra Chowk, is a quiet place in a nice location that has great views. The rooms are in a Newar-style building.
Dhulikhel Mountain Resort (61466; Kathmandu office: 428-774, 420-778fax), 4km east of town towards Barabise and the Tibetan border, is in a beautiful area. It has high quality luxury thatched cottages for $80/85. They often give a 25% discount. It has fantastic views of the mountains.
Himalayan Mountain Resort (61158), 4km east o f Dhulikhel a little past the Dhulikhel Mountain Resort, has a good view and a nice garden. Rooms with bath are $32/36. They often offer a 25% discount. It has a quiet location. It has a restaurant that serves Newari food. To stay her you most likely will want to have your own transportation.

Travel
Dhulikhel is 32km east of Kathmandu. There are hourly buses (#12) from City bus station in Kathmandu to here (2 hr, Rs 20). The buses go pass Bhaktapur and through Banepa (Rs 6).
A taxi is Rs 750 from Kathmandu and Rs 500 from Bhaktapur.
